Charleston Vacay Recap {Day 1 & 2}

Now that it has been over a month since we have been on vacation to our favorite spot, Charleston, I thought I would share a recap with ya'll. I am not sure why we don't just move there already. One day...fingers crossed! In the mean time I will live through these memories!

We left and made the 10 hour drive from Augusta around 4am. Nick is such the trooper and drove through the wee hours of the morning. We arrived in Charleston in time to check into our hotel in Mt. Pleasant. We quickly unpacked and changed into our swim suits and headed to Sullivan's Island. It is just minutes from downtown Charleston and where we were staying. It is about 3 miles long and are other favorite beach is it's neighbor, Isle of Palms. Sullivan's is less crowded though. A little bit of history for ya.  In its early days, a trolley system helped residents get from one part of the island to the other, stopping at various "stations" along its journey. The trolleys are long gone, but the stations live on. Another tid bit, Writer Edgar Allan Poe was stationed at Fort Moultrie (located on Sullivan's Island) from November 1827 to December 1828 and used Sullivan's  as the setting for his short story, The Gold Bug. We spent a few hours soaking up the sun and stretching our toes in the sand after a long drive from Kentucky. For dinner we stopped at Ye Ole Fashioned Ice Cream & Sandwich CafĂ©. This is one of our favorite laid back spots to grab something yummy to eat. Plus they have amazing homemade ice cream.

After dinner we decided to take an evening walk on the beach. We walked up and down the beach collecting shells and little crabs.

On Saturday we spent the day at Isle of Palms. That morning they had a Sand Castle Building contest. By the time we got there it was over but all the sand castle were still there for us to enjoy. We love love IOP. It was crowded of course since it was a weekend. After a couple of hours we decided it was time to walk around Charleston. I was having withdrawals and couldn't wait to see my beloved city. We first stopped at the Pineapple Fountain at Waterfront Park along the Cooper River. There are tons of areas to sit and take in the breathtaking view of the Harbor and the Ravenel Bridge. We then walked along Rainbow Row, all the  many waterfront mansions, and the beautiful alley ways. The kids were begging for the Charleston Candy Kitchen. Walls and barrels filled with candy, fresh pralines, and fudge. They also have gelato! The kids will not stop asking for this place so it's best to stop there the first day or two.

Charleston is truly our happy place. I can't wait to share more of our vacation! So stay tuned!!
